Headlights and Streetlamps

I left

The light on

For you

You can see it through

The window

A square of warmth

I’m on the second floor

And I’m not

Looking out yet

I will be later

Maybe you will see me

Dark circles under my eyes

Watching the planes

Their own

Blinking lights

Trailing across the midnight blue

I will be making patterns in the stars

Wishing the city didn’t

Block

So many out

Headlights and streetlamps

A graceful crescent moon

And you will be one of them

A pair of headlights

Passing streetlamps

Driving home

I will keep the light on for you

You don’t have to be

Here

You don’t have to see it

For it to be true
