Surely it’s not Your Card?

A curiosity of

Mine, among many

Has always been

Sleight of hand

The coin flashes in

The air

Between fingers

Reappears in hair

In pockets

Doves and humans, even

Gone, somehow

But my favorite always

The cards

And I’ve never been

Patient enough

To learn tricks

Card here

Card there

Is this your card?

Watch these deft hands

Like butterflies

Cards arc through the room

Surely it’s not

Your card?

But it is

In any case

I still carry a deck

It follows me around

Hidden away

Pocket inside a pocket

And I’m friends with

The aces and kings

We take comfort in solitaire

No need for the lights and

Sly smiles

While I pretend my cards

Are gone, somehow

A lie only we can see through
