A Winter Night

I stand witness

Fire stacked with fuel

People soaking in the light

The warmth

Full moon peeking through

Coastal clouds

Wind off the ocean

A cold, harsh contrast

To the feeling of life

When the flames go out

And the clouds are left

Behind, over the mountains

I can still feel it all

Smoke stings my eyes

Sit in the sand and lean

On your shoulder

Say nothing

There is nothing to say

Burn it all away now

The more sparks fly the

Easier it is to forget

The world is not just

Pit fires, psychedelic pop music

Stars through the haze and

Using friends as windbreakers

The flames burn higher

Reality becomes obsolete

We could walk the coasts edge

Forever

Never look back

Six strangers in

A meandering line onward

Laughing

Trailing the scent

Of wood smoke

They look so alive

Now the fog seeps

Up the sand and the cliffs

And they are obscured from view

When the fog clears

They are gone

Off to some safe place where

Sparks fly high and

The wind howls and

Sweet music hums

Here, only their mingling footprints

Set deep in the wet sand

Remain
