Give It No Attention

There are some days

You have to chase away

With a broom

Sweep it out the door with the dirt

Scraps of paper and lint

Slam the screen behind you

Watch through the wire mesh

As the dust devils swirl it up

Shuffle it across the street

Mix it into the leaves and

Occasional candy wrapper

You leave the door unlocked

Sun stretching rays into the house

Like a path to golden euphoria

The floorboards are warm for hours

After night falls

The day tries to return then

Hissing and rattling the screen in

The swirling breeze

But you give it no attention

Turning instead to

Champagne flutes and tea

Kettles and sleep

Soft, dizzying dreams

The day gives up

Skitters down the empty street

And from the silence

Comes a new day
