Happiness
Happiness is warmth,
a clean breeze in summer,
a golden eternity in a single moment,
it is breathing easy,
feeling light.
It is giddy,
tossing your bags aside to run in the sprinklers,
stealing the corner of my shirt to clean the water off your glasses.
Happiness is finding constellations in each other’s freckles,
setting and tending and watching a fire burn full,
it is soaring high and free in your mind
even as you are still.
It is holding hands and skipping,
it is good food and tea and sharing it with someone,
the pure relief of a song performed in glowing perfection,
an inside joke and knowing smile,
a shared hoodie.
It is a range,
a spectrum.
It can be contentment and comfort
as much as it can be ecstatic,
euphoric,
loving.
Sometimes
it sends you to the clouds and the stars,
tumbling head over heels.
Sometimes
it is a low rumble in your ribs,
a weight and warmth
like a good quilt.
Sometimes
it is clean and honest,
the knowledge of what is good for you,
seeing it before you,
calmly cherishing it.
Most importantly,
happiness does not tire you to feel,
it carries you.
