Wood Smoke and the Rising Sun

Up on my hill

You can watch the

Sun

Set

I would stay out longer but

It’s freezing

Steal your breath

Coat your soul in

Ice

Freezing

And I wonder

Watching

Kids

Race up and down driveways

Laughing

Wave to parents through

Open windows

I wonder if you

Are keeping warm

If you are seeing all the

Colors

I can’t place

Can’t commemorate

And when I get back

Inside

My hoodie smells

Like wood smoke

Like hot flame and

Warmer nights

And I wonder

How

Long

It will take

For the world to thaw

So that we may stay out

All night

And watch the sun

Rise

Anew
